Sailing Solo

If you enjoy your own company and like doing your own thing without answering to anyone, then going solo on a cruise could be a great vacation for you. Not only can you have time to yourself, but when you need some company, there's a whole shipload of travelers to meet. You can follow your own plan without having to worry about whether your traveling companion wants to do the same thing you do.

There are a few drawbacks to traveling alone. The biggest one is the extra percentage you have to pay as a single person occupying a double room. The extra fees vary from cruise line to cruise line. However, expect to pay at the very least 125% of your of your cruise fare. There are a few options to save your some money if you plan to cruise solo.

First of all, think about sharing a cabin with someone. Some cruise lines will try and fill roommate requests when you sign on for a cruise. This means rooming with a stranger, but you will save some money by avoiding a possible double occupancy rate. The cruise line will only match you with someone of the same sex, so if they cannot fill your roommate request, you will end up paying extra for the privilege of sailing solo.

Shop around and contact a travel agent about which cruise lines have the lowest fees for single travelers. A few luxury liners will charge a lot less for a single person in a double occupancy cabin than the bigger, less luxurious chains. That means, you could upgrade to a better ship at a cheaper price! These deals are often hard to come by so it will take some research on your

Cruising at the Speed of 55

part.

If you are willing to travel on a cruise in the off-season or off peak times, you can get great deals for going solo. Many times those supplemental fees are waived entirely. Or, if you are a fly by the seat of your pants kind of person, you could travel at the last minute. Many times, cruise ships will have some empty cabins they need to fill and will even offer discounts to do just that, meaning that you could actually get off cheaper than you would by planning ahead.

Once you are on the ship, you may want to meet up with some other people traveling solo. You can do so in a variety of ways. Talk with the Activities Director on board. Explain that you are traveling alone and ask for suggestions of some things to do to meet others just like yourself. Chances are that others have been asking the same question. There are tons of activities on board, so go ahead and sign up for some that seem interesting to you.

Dinner time is also a great way to meet other people. Aboard cruise ships, there are often group dinners where up to ten people are sharing a table together. If you don't like your dining companions, ask for a new table the next night. See if you can be seated with other passengers traveling solo.

Sailing solo is nothing to be scared about. You are just as safe on a ship where everyone is contained in one area than anywhere else. The best part is that no one else has to know you are traveling alone unless you choose to tell them. So book your solo cruise with confidence and be ready to have the best experience of your life!
