What to Pack for your Alaskan Adventure

Untitled Document

If you are going to a tropical destination, it is fairly simple to figure out what kind of attire to pack - lightweight clothing in anticipation of warm, humid temperatures. But you are going on a cool Alaskan cruise. Sure, it is summer time there, but that could mean temperatures anywhere from the high forties to the low eighties!

What do you pack an anticipation of unpredictable weather? Veteran travelers often answer this question with a single word: layers. Because you could literally experience every season of weather in a single day, layers of clothing allow you to add on or take off items of clothing to maximize your comfort levels.

The key to layering is to pick clothing that is not heavy, something like cotton that is light and airy. Tee shirts can serve as the foundation of your outfit. A flannel shirt, hooded sweatshirt or turtlenecks can be worn over the t-shirt and removed easily as temperatures warm up. Cotton sweaters or jackets are also appropriate. Jeans or khaki pants will also serve you well on your Alaskan cruise. Pack a pair or two of thermal underwear just in case.

Jogging suits may also be a great addition to your wardrobe. A lot of them are lined in cotton, providing just enough insulation for comfortable warmth. Be sure to bring some rain gear too. Waterproof jackets are lightweight, fold up and are easily worn over your normal jacket and other clothing.

If you are traveling in early May or late September, Alaska is a bit cooler at that time. Therefore gloves, heavy lined jackets and even coats made with that polar fleece material are appropriate choices. These come in handy if you get to experience any glaciers up close

and personal.

Your choice of footwear is also important. If you go on any type of shore excursions where a lot of walking or hiking on rough terrain is involved, your feet will thank you for wearing sturdy shoes and warm, thick socks. Do not wear brand new shoes either. Make sure you break them in before your trip so you do not suffer from blisters.

As with all cruises, there will probably be some nightlife on board. Pack something that could work with either a casual atmosphere or something semi-formal. Basic black or navy colors work great. Pack a swimsuit too. Chances are you will have opportunities to soak in the hot tub or swim in the cruise ship's heated swimming pool. What a great way to cap off a day of cool adventure!

Some other must-haves in your packing quest for Alaska include insect repellent, binoculars, a lightweight backpack, a camera (panoramic attachments are a must with the scenery you will encounter), moisturizer and lip balm. Since mosquitoes have been know to carry people off the ship, insect repellent will help keep the pesky critters away. Binoculars are to zoom into the most spectacular scenery you could imagine. Your camera should be like an appendage of your arm on this Alaskan cruise! The breathtaking views you will capture on film will be priceless memories. Moisturizer and lip balm are for keeping your lips and skin supple. Extreme temperatures tend to dry out your skin, so these two items will be very handy.

Being prepared for any type of weather is basically the rule of thumb when packing for your Alaskan cruise. The challenge for you will be to pack enough for your needs while still being able to carry your suitcase!
